How to display file icons for .mat, .m, and .fig files in Linux

I have MATLAB installed in Linux, however, I cannot see any of my files as .m .mat or .fig with the appropriate matlab icons on them. They all look like text file icons.

I attempted following the advice of this link: but it does not appear to work for me.

The MIMES are not working and the icons are not named as such in the website. I cant seem to find where MATLAB stores the file icons on linux after spending an hour going down a rabbit hole finding them. Has anyone successfully set this up?

Hi @Cyrus Abdollahi,

Could you share what linux OS you are using? For the icon, you can use your own image file or recursively search for the file name inside "/usr" using the following command. Also, try for different possible icon names or icon folders.

find . -name "matlab.svg"

For my debian 11 system, I found the "matlab.svg" inside

/usr/share/icons/breeze/apps/48

Also, refer to this MATLAB Answer below and append "%F" to the Exec path in the matlab.desktop file.

Thanks, I finally got it to work. Unfortuantely, my PoP OS does not have any icons in it even after using find. I had to custom make my own icons using screen shots from my windows computer and cropping out the backgrounds. I tried the %F on my desktop - that works but the problem remains that every time I double click on a file it opens new instances of matlab. Aparantly this is a known issue in MATLAB - linux which is strange because linux has been around forever using MATLAB. Im surprised MATLAB did not fix this issue long time ago.

Instead of manually taking a screenshot and editing the background, you can also create a MATLAB logo using the following commands:

logo 
exportgraphics(gcf, 'MATLAB_logo.png')

Thanks Brahmadev, I was able to find the logo easily but my issue was finding the file icons.
