Why do the plots on my mac look so different from the ones on my pc?

I am an astrophysics student and am currently taking a class on MATLAB programing. I bought the program in a student version for my Macbook laptop and I noticed that the plots produced from my macbook are much more "outdated looking" than those that are output from the MATLAB on the pc computers in our computer lab.

And example of a side by side comparison between the two are below; with the plot form my mac on the right and the on for the pc on the left.

As you can see, even the default colors are much more harsh and everything is much more pixilated from my mac than from the pc. I am wondering if the defaults on my student version for the mac are possibly set differently, if it has to do with the student version, or if it has to do with the different computers in general.

I like the plots from the pc much much more seeing that they have a cleaner and more professional edge to them.

Any advice will be welcomed, even if it mean I might have to buy a new add on for my student version.

The graphics in Matlab were overhauled between release R2014a and R2014b. I'm assuming you mislabeled them in your description... looks like the the computer on the left is using the old graphics, while the one on the right is using the new. Your R2014a version needs to be updated to get the new handle graphics.
