Hello
I am trying to implement a solver for the differential algebraic problem given here using implicit Runge-Kutta method (from scratch). The iteration of the Runge-Kutta methods for this classes of problems is given by (referene is here)
![](https://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/answers/uploaded_files/1201553/image.png)
Here is my attempt. It doesn't seem that I am doing it right. The solution of my code does not match the one obtained from ode15s. Any help or suggestions?
Thanks for the help in advance.
clc,clear,close all
dt = 1/1000;
n = 1/dt;
y0 = [1; 0; 0];
t0 = 0;
T = 4000000;
m = length(y0); % dim. of problem
% RHS
f = @robertsdae;
% Runge-Kutta coefficients
a = 2*cos(pi/18)/sqrt(3);
A = [(1+a)/2, 0 , 0;
-a/2 , (1+a)/2, 0;
1+a , -(1+2*a), (1+a)/2];
b = [1/(6*a^2);1-(1/(3*a^2));1/(6*a^2)];
c = [(1+a)/2; 1/2; (1-a)/2];
s = length(c);
% intitalize time and solution vector
t = zeros(1,n+1);
y = zeros(m,n+1);
% initial conditions

I meant that the solution of my code does not match the one obtained from ode15s. As far as I can see, I did write the code but there might be something I did not do correctly which led to the wrong result. I am hoping that someone could spot it and I can fix it myself. There is no more information to share.

It seems that your DAE solver solves the third equation as a differential equation, not as an algebraic equation (see below).
clc,clear,close all
n = 1000;
t0 = 0;
T = 3;
dt = (T-t0)/n;
y0 = [1; 0; 0];
m = length(y0); % dim. of problem
% RHS
f = @robertsdae;
% Runge-Kutta coefficients
a = 2*cos(pi/18)/sqrt(3);
A = [(1+a)/2, 0 , 0;
-a/2 , (1+a)/2, 0;
1+a , -(1+2*a), (1+a)/2];
b = [1/(6*a^2);1-(1/(3*a^2));1/(6*a^2)];
c = [(1+a)/2; 1/2; (1-a)/2];
s = length(c);
% intitalize time and solution vector
t = zeros(1,n+1);
y = zeros(m,n+1);
% initial conditions
t(1) = t0;
y(:,1) = y0;
xiguess = zeros(m*s,1);
for i = 1:n
XI = @(xi) [xi(1:m) - f(t(i)+c(1)*dt,y(:,i)+dt*(A(1,1)*xi(1:m)+A(1,2)*xi(m+1:m*s-m)+A(1,3)*xi(m*s-m+1:m*s)));
xi(m+1:m*s-m) - f(t(i)+c(2)*dt,y(:,i)+dt*(A(2,1)*xi(1:m)+A(2,2)*xi(m+1:m*s-m)+A(2,3)*xi(m*s-m+1:m*s)));
xi(m*s-m+1:m*s) - f(t(i)+c(3)*dt,y(:,i)+dt*(A(3,1)*xi(1:m)+A(3,2)*xi(m+1:m*s-m)+A(3,3)*xi(m*s-m+1:m*s)))];
xi = fsolve(XI,xiguess);
t(i+1) = t(i) + dt;
y(:,i+1) = y(:,i) + dt * (b(1)*xi(1:m) + b(2)*xi(m+1:m*s-m) + b(3)*xi(m*s-m+1:m*s));
xiguess = xi;

You solved
dy(1)/dt = -0.04*y(1) + 1e4*y(2).*y(3)
dy(2)/dt = 0.04*y(1) - 1e4*y(2).*y(3) - 3e7*y(2).^2
dy(3)/dt = y(1) + y(2) + y(3) - 1
MATLAB's ode15s solved
dy(1)/dt = -0.04*y(1) + 1e4*y(2).*y(3)
dy(2)/dt = 0.04*y(1) - 1e4*y(2).*y(3) - 3e7*y(2).^2
0 = y(1) + y(2) + y(3) - 1
I changed what MATLAB's ode15s solved into what you solved, and the results are identical.
That's why I said that your code solves the last equation as differential equation, not as algebraic equation. So you will have to modify your code for that it is capable to solve algebraic equations as well.

Oh okay so we haven't fixed anything yet. You just modified the ode15s to solve the wrong equation (which my solver did solve). Right? Do you have any idea on how exactly should I add the last equation as algebraic equation? Do I have to create a different function handle for it?
