hi, i'm designing a robotic arm for pick and place applications .i need to find the forces exerted by the fingers . i tried using spring damper system in sim mechanics 1st gen(2014a) .but i unable to attach a sensor to the spring damper system . please let me know how to solve this issue.also let me know if there are any other methods to find out the end forces .

Can't you use a Joint Sensor block?
This example in the documentation also shows you how to add more Sensor/Actuator ports to your joints so you can actually connect these blocks.
