Communicating with Mathematica (or getting SMATLink to work)

Hi, I would really appreciate if I were able to communicate MatLab with mathematica. However, I need to be able to call mathematica functions from within MatLab (a MatLab loop), so MatLink (<http://matlink.org/>) does not quite suit my needs. An alternative I found was this SMATLink package (<http://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/fileexchange/20573-smatlink-let-matlab-dance-with-mathematica)>, but I could not get it to work, since it seems somewhat outdated. Can anybody suggest a solution? Thanks.
