Fitting to a threshold distribution

I would like to fit a shifted gamma distribution and a generalized normal distribution to a time serie of precipitation data. Since the models are shifted, MLE usually fails. I also tried the method of moments using mean, variance and skewness of my data and I get a relatively acceptable answer, but they dont pass any goodness of fit test.

Is there another method to use?
