Triangulated Surface Mesh Simplification

Can anyone please give me some ideas how to simplify triangulated surface mesh using matlab? Like the picture shown in http://doc.cgal.org/latest/Surface_mesh_simplification/

Is there some way to reduce a patch that has colored faces? reducepatch will not work for such a patch object
