Matlab 2013b is unresponsive after new installation and deletion of installation folder

I've just deleted 2013a and installed 2013b in it's place (OSX 10.8.5). After installation is finished, I can open and close matlab. However, if I delete the "mathworks_downloads" installation folder on my desktop, Matlab hangs and will not close. Is this installation folder necessary for operation of matlab, or are there some key files that are included there that were deleted from by 2013a deletion?
