From the series: MATLAB and Simulink Robotics Arena
Sebastian Castro, MathWorks
Connell D'Souza, MathWorks
Join MATLAB® and Simulink® Robotics Arena team members as they discuss the aspects of designing a robotic system and the support they provide to robotics student competition teams worldwide.
Sebastian Castro focuses on university-level robotics competitions such as RoboCup. Commonly known for robot soccer, RoboCup leagues also include rescue, industrial, and personal robotics applications. Connell D’Souza focuses on autonomous vehicle competitions such as the RoboNation competitions. These include RoboBoat, RoboSub, RobotX, SUAS, IGVC, and IARC.
To design a robotic system, you generally need to perform two sets of tasks: perception and control. Perception is the use of sensors to get information about robots and their surrounding environment. Control converts this information into a set of actions that can solve a problem or perform a task.
Prototyping activities, such as simulation, data collection and analysis, and desktop connectivity to hardware, can help you design perception and control systems. Later, you may need to implement these prototypes on a different software architecture or hardware platform so the robot can operate autonomously and reliably.
MathWorks provides support for student competitions in many fields, including robotics. Depending on your competition, you may have access to complimentary software licenses, learning resources, and ways to communicate with MathWorks engineers. For more information, view the following resources:
