Extracting time slices and putting them back together in 4d for ITK snap?

Taking a 4d MRI image that has two subjects stacked by time slices. I have been able to recreate one 3d image of one specific time frame but cannot get them to be placed together for a 4d image. I am having problems with the make_nii and save_nii and am not quite sure how to get it to work.
