basinsps Antarctic Drainage Basin Plotter
basinsps outlines Antarctic ice drainage basins identified by Zwally et al. 2012. This is a polar stereographic implementation of the basins function. Matlab's Mapping Toolbox is not required. Syntax differs somewhat from basins syntax.
basinsps basinsps(...,basintype) basinsps(...,'basin',BasinNumbers) basinsps(...,'labels') basinsps(...,'km') basinsps(...,LineProperty,LineValue) [h,lat,lon,htext] = basins(...)
basinsps outlines drainage divides of the entire ice sheet within the extents of the current polar stereographic map.
basinsps(...,basintype) specifies 'full' or 'grounded'. Default is 'full' for the entire ice sheet.
basinsps(...,'basin',BasinNumbers) outlines only basin(s) specified by BasinNumber(s) which are in the range 1 to 27.
basinsps(...,'labels') places a text label identifier for each basin.
basinsps(...,'km') plots in polar stereographic kilometers.
basinsps(...,LineProperty,LineValue) specifies line properties.
[h,lat,lon,htext] = basins(...) returns a handle h of plotted lines, lat,lon of basin outlines, and a handle of text labels.
The first time you use basins, you'll need to run basins_install. It will try to do all the work for you. The installation script takes about 30 seconds to run on a modern laptop computer.
Plot a map of full Antarctic ice sheet drainage basins:
Plot bedmap2 bed elevations and then add fat reddish outlines of grounded ice:

Outline only basins 3, 10, and 13, and plot in polar stereographic kilometers. Formatting the text label requires a little manual interaction:
