Speed of Development: The Future of Machine Building
Dr. Sergei Schurov, GF Machining Solutions
Swiss machine tool builders have always relied on precision mechanics and superior product quality. These elements continue to play a major role in global competitiveness, but no longer guarantee their commercial success. One of the most important factors in today’s success is the ability to develop quickly and efficiently.
To achieve these goals, opportunities are plenty. First, the rapidly evolving global innovation ecosystem generates many ideas and solutions that can be integrated into products to increase performance and functionality. Next, the continuous increase in computing power coupled with rapidly evolving capabilities of electronic systems allows for shorter product life cycles. Additionally, for electro erosion machines, where the control process is highly nonlinear in time and space, control algorithm validation and optimization remains a major challenge. Finally, the changing production landscape highlighted by the Industry 4.0 framework calls for flexible production processes and adaptable customer solutions. All of the above must be achieved without compromising product reliability. For R&D teams this means one thing: the relentless drive for a more efficient development environment with fewer prototypes and design iterations.
R&D teams at Georg Fischer Machining Solutions are rising to the challenge by using Model-Based Design in their product development process. This applies to dynamic modeling of mechanical structures, simulating behaviors of production modules and their interaction with machine systems, developing and testing multiprocess control algorithms, and optimizing information exchange between machine tools and their operator or automation cell.
This presentation focuses on several use cases where Model-Based Design allows Georg Fischer Machining Solutions to challenge traditional development processes and bring speed and flexibility to new machine tools design while reducing cost and improving performance, quality, and reliability.
