This text is intended for use in senior and first-year graduate courses on linear systems and multivariable system design in electrical, mechanical, chemical, and aeronautical departments. It may also be useful to practicing engineers because it contains many design procedures. The mathematical background it assumes is a working knowledge of linear algebra, the Laplace transform, and an elementary knowledge of differential equations. The discussion of linear system theory is limited to the conventional approaches of state-space equations and the polynomial fraction method of transfer matrices. In state-space design, Lyapunov equations are used extensively to design state feedback and state estimators. In the discussion of transfer-function design, pole placement, model matching, and their applications in tracking and disturbance rejection are covered. All results in this edition are developed for numerical computation and illustrated using MATLAB with an emphasis on the ideas behind the computation and interpretation of results.
